Resilient American Communities Convocation

The RAC Convocation will focus on understanding and funding health literacy, vaccination equity, and health equity activities in emerging resilient American communities. We will examine efforts around the U.S. raising up health and resilience for vulnerable and historically disenfranchised populations, including the mental health dimensions of the COVID crisis. Throughout the day on April 8, we will discuss potential funding opportunities associated with emerging RAC sites.
Around 11:30 AM Eastern time Ivan Walks will introduce Rev Kinzer M. Pointer. Reverend Pointer will speak about community partnerships to reduce pandemic effects on vulnerable populations. Reverend Pointer will share a short video that describes how his congregation has addressed Covid with no deaths as he promotes vaccinations in his community.
In the morning session, Jan Booher will provide more details on the DHHS Office of Minority Health’s $250 million funding program for advancing health literacy in high vulnerability communities, such as in emerging RAC sites. At 1:00 PM we will hear from Cynthia Baur, Director of the Horowtiz Center for Health Literacy at the University of Maryland School of Public Health on the current evolution of the field of health literacy in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic cycle. Cynthia will be followed by Myrna Weissman of Columbia University. Dr. Weissman will have a short discussion with us about her work in the U.S. and overseas with WHO on peer-to-peer mental health and well-being programs in vulnerable communities.
At 3:30 pm Eastern time, Dr. Tracy Delaney, Founding Executive Director of the Public Health Alliance of Southern California will be demonstrating the Healthy Places Index (HPI) and discussing how it has been used throughout the State of California during the COVID-19 pandemic and syndemic. The HPI is an important tool to understand the social determinant of health at the hyper-local level.
